I have built and run several commercial web sites for the chemical
industry. Here are some of the more notable ones (and yes, I know
their logos are all variations on a globe; don't blame me):
AFEAS
|
|
The Alternative Fluorocarbon Environmental Acceptability Study
To test alternatives to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) for their environmental, health,
and safety characteristics, seventeen of the world's largest chemical
companies joined together to form the Alternative Fluorocarbons
Environmental Acceptability Study (AFEAS). This program was set up
to provide research on the potential effects of CFC alternatives on
the environment and on human health. Today, AFEAS has published the
results of this extensive research,
and also collects and publishes yearly statistics on the production,
sales, and emissions of all major CFCs and HCFCs, all of which is
available for free download from their web site.

The Alliance
|
|
The Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy
The Alliance is a coalition of companies that produce
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs),
and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs); manufacture products that use
these chemicals; and organizations whose services rely on these
chemicals. It was organized in 1980 and continues to coordinate
industry participation in development of reasonable international
and U.S. government policies regarding ozone protection and global
climate change.

| |
GGEEC
|
|
The Greenhouse Gases Emissions Estimating Consortium
The Greenhouse Gases Emission Estimating Consortium (GGEEC)
was formed in 1999 to develop credible and consistent emissions
estimating, reporting and forecasting tools for Industrial
Gases. These gases include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs),
perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).
|
| |
ICCP
|
|
The International Climate Change Partnership
The International Climate Change Partnership (ICCP) is a
global coalition of companies and trade associations from diverse
industries committed to constructive and responsible participation
in the international policy process concerning global climate
change. ICCP recognizes that the continued growth in emissions
of greenhouse gases is an important concern for all nations and
that efforts are underway internationally and in national
governments to develop policies that address this concern.

PAFT
|
|
Programme for Alternative
Fluorocarbon Toxicity Testing
(Note: PAFT is no longer operational. But I designed
the page, built it, and ran it for several years,
so it's still worth looking at, and amazingly, it still
gets regularly visited.)
In response to increasing concerns that certain chlorine-containing
compounds, such as the fully halogenated chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs),
may be catalyzing a decrease in stratospheric ozone levels, the
world's major producers of these chemicals agreed to work together
to evaluate the toxicity of potential replacements. The Programme
for Alternative Fluorocarbon Toxicity Testing (PAFT) is a cooperative
research effort sponsored by 16 of the leading CFC producers. The
programme was designed to expedite the development of toxicology
data for possible substitute fluorocarbons.
