SpaceMonger 2.1 includes a lot of capabilities that the
previous 1.x versions don't. Some are things that I think
are necessary; some are things that you folks suggested.
Here are a few of the more notable ones:
- Version 2.1 will come with a full user's manual (in English
initially, and possibly in other languages later).
- Version 2.1 will come with an installer, so you can just click
once or twice to install it on any system.
- Version 2.1 includes better shell integration, so you can
simply drag-and-drop files to copy/move them, and so you can right-click
on a folder or disk to open it in SpaceMonger.
- Version 2.1 knows how to watch your disks (on Windows NT/2000/XP)
so that you don't need to rescan the disks when they change.
- Version 2.1 includes full control over file and folder colors,
including user-defined marking of special files or folder types
with a specific color. You can also change every font the program
uses if you don't like the ones we pick!
- Version 2.1 allows you to select multiple files at once, even
from different folders, and manipulate (copy, move, delete) them as
a group.
- Version 2.1 has a new smart-zooming feature that allows you
to zoom in and out on your disk in real-time, just like zooming
in and out on a picture in a paint program or zooming with a
telescope. You can get close enough to see details on 1-byte files
on a 40-gigabyte disk!
- Version 2.1 will support many foreign languages (see the
languages page for a complete list),
and unlike the rather poor French translation in version 1.4, the
translations in version 2.1 will be done by people who natively
speak the respective languages. If you'd like to contribute a
translation that we don't already have, please
contact us;
a good translation can earn you a free registration and a chance
to be a beta tester.
- Version 2.1 will be licensed as Shareware, not Freeware, but it will have the
almost-free registration cost of only $20 (hefty discounts will be
available for those who buy multiple registrations at once, or
a site license). Sorry --- But twenty bucks is pretty cheap.
(What happened to the old $15 price? Simple: it costs us money to
support credit card purchases, so we have to pass that cost on.
With a $20 price tag, we still only see $15 before taxes. Sorry.)
We've gotten far more requests than we can accommodate for version
2.1. Here are some of the things that you've suggested that we're
considering for version 2.2:
- Full network browsing, allowing you to see multiple disks
shared via standard Windows SMB file shares.
- The internals of 2.1 presently use mostly 8-bit character strings,
which is sufficient for the needs of most European languages,
but not sufficient for the needs of Asian languages. Some portions
use 16-bit Unicode to support correct display of foreign-language
filenames on Windows NT/2000/XP, and version 2.2 will be entirely
16-bit Unicode so it can support any language out there.
- If version 2.1 is sufficiently popular on Windows, we'll seriously
consider producing ports to other operating systems, including
Linux and MacOS. Start your lobbying now!
